The original sheathing is a thin (1/8) cardboard covered in foil and will be replaced.
Fiberboard sheathing is often heavily treated with flame retardants and impregnated with asphalt, which eliminates the potential for composting and limits recycling options. Oriented strand board (aka osb) could also be used as the sheathing under the board and batten by swapping the old fiberboard for 3/4″ plywood, i was able to install the board and batten siding installing keene brand rainscreen drainage mat over asphalt felt to create an air space drain plane.
